Morgan Sindall set for £40m Birmingham Uni lab job

Construction & Build

Birmingham University is understood to have selected Morgan Sindall to build the £40m first phase of its landmark new molecular sciences building.

Morgan Sindall is one of its pool of preferred firms selected to deliver a 10-year, £500m  development programme.

Designed by Associated Architects, the 12,790 sq m hub building will provide a focal point for the University’s core research capabilities in chemical, environmental and bio-molecular sciences, and provide improved facilities for academics and post-graduate students.

Located at the old Munrow Sports Centre site at its Edgbaston Campus, it will form the first part of a flagship complex to be delivered in several phases.

The lab and office project gained full planning in June, with work expected to start early next year.

The main lab facades will be clad with large floor to ceiling metal panels, with the front entrance elevation softened with glazing and vertical shading fins which project out from the façade at 90degrees.
