Plans in for Lendlease £1.9bn Birmingham Smithfield scheme
Residential & Regeneration, Construction & Build
Lendlease has submitted plans for the massive £1.9bn redevelopment of the Smithfield Market site in Birmingham city centre.
The hybrid planning application sets out plans for 3,500 homes in the area alongside nearly 1.3m sq ft of shops and workspace.
More than 50 new buildings form part of the masterplan drawn up by architect Prior + Partners, along with a flight of other architects working up detailed building plans in phase one.
Plans include two public squares – Festival Square and Market Square – that will form a new connection between the Bull Ring, Digbeth and the Chinese Quarter.
Joint venture partner and landowner Birmingham City Council named Lendlease as development partner in 2018 for the 10-year plan to transform the 17ha site brownfield site at a key location in the city centre.
Subject to approval, enabling work on the site could commence this year, with the construction of first phase buildings due to start by the end of 2024 for occupation in 2028.
The detailed element of the project accounts for around a third of the overall planned Birmingham Smithfield scheme.
