Construction to start on 17-storey apartment block The Landmark in Derby

Residential & Regeneration, Construction & Build

The start of construction work on a 17-storey apartment block in Derby city centre appears to be pushing closer. Plans were approved by Derby City Council in 2020 for The Landmark tower to be built on a car park off Phoenix Street. When complete it will comprise more than 200 new apartments.

Now the firms behind the project have submitted a construction management plan to the council which provides an update on the “high-quality” project. No start date is revealed for work but the publication and submission of these documents suggest it will be sooner rather than later.

Documents state that works will begin with a series of "enabling operations and surveys", including site geotechnical investigations and checks on the condition of adjoining buildings, features, roads, hard standings and boundaries. Once these have been carried out, works to build the foundations of the tower will begin.

Internal work on the floors and the apartments themselves will be carried out during stage three of the construction works. It was reported in 2021 that billboards could be seen on the vacant land stating “Another project by Godwin Developments”.

Developer Godwin Developments has previously stated the building will bring many benefits to Derby. A previous statement from them said: “Derby is a forward-thinking city on a journey to realise its potential and we believe that The Landmark plays an important part in that ambition, in particular as the city recovers post-pandemic.

“The Landmark, as one of the new high-quality residential developments in Derby, will play an important part in reinvigorating the city centre, make a significant contribution to housing targets and deliver economic benefits arising from increased footfall, jobs, revenue and investment to the city.”

At the time it was approved, it was said that The Landmark would be Derby’s tallest apartment block. However, this may not be the case for long with new plans submitted for a 29-storey building within the "Eagle Quarter" of the city centre and a 19-storey building planned for the city centre’s Bradshaw Retail Park.
