Bid race for £21m Tate Liverpool revamp

Bidding is underway for a project to overhaul the grade 1 listed Tate Liverpool gallery building at the city’s Royal Albert Dock.

The Re-Imagining Tate Liverpool is a major remodelling of the building to improve the gallery’s visibility and presence on the dock underlining its credentials as a leading international cultural institution.

Already 6a architects has been appointed to redesign the iconic 1846 warehouse that was redesigned by Sir James Stirling and Michael Wilford in the late 1980s.

Planned works will include significant alterations throughout the galleries including breakout of floors, new lifts and stairs, as well as a complete building services refit and façade replacement.

The design is hoped to reveal more of the former Victorian warehouse through its new open plan ground floor

The chosen contractor will initially work for 3 months under a pre-construction services agreement before agreeing a final price for the 17-month revamp.
